I can’t.
Back in July, I got hit with some political lightening and I dove headfirst into blogging about election season. I had committed to writing weekly. I knew at the time it was not a wise idea to say that out loud, but I figured if I made it public, I would do it. Think again, B. Which I did, when I was on vacation a month ago (pictured above). I realized that there were other things that I needed to be doing.
This was reaffirmed after watching the debate last night.
I never thought I would say this, but Donald Trump is right. We need to make America great. (The “again” part… yeah, no.)
I clicked around to a few of the post-debate breakdowns, so I can’t remember which commentator said this, but one pointed out that many people were already entrenched in their voting positions, and the debate meant little if anything to them. This takes me back to my frustrations and the question that I’ve been asking in these handful of not-weekly blogs.
If 74 million people thought in 2020 that it was a great idea to have Donald Trump lead our nation, and the power-brokers of whatever the GOP claims itself to be insist that this is their 2024 king, then I don’t know what to tell you. Just like Trump doesn’t know what to tell you, so he says whatever he feels like, which was on full display last night.
We’re not going to reach the fullest potential of our nation and world with inhumane, ill-equipped reality TV leadership. And yet, for some who feel failed by the Democratic Party, they see this as an either-or, and not the abnormal chaos that it actually is. It’s the lure of a romanticized “traditional” American voting process, with the insanity of something else not even hiding, but in full view. Some people don’t know any better. Some people know exactly what they’re doing. Some people don’t care. Some people are just getting their own money. And some people are getting played.
If I figure out something relevant to add to the mix between now and November, I’ll be back. But right now, all I got is “grow up, America.” Because this is so embarrassing, and dangerous, it certainly isn’t funny. And it never was.
